- Floating Box House
Creativity is needed when departing from conventional construction: the central staricase at Floating Box House is the perfect example of this. Our minimal design was too complex for traditional steel fabrication, while the shops capable of doing it were out of budget. Engaged in design and construction, the ALDB team turned to an unexpected solution: a local steel shop specializing in motorcycle craftmanship who were more imaginative and less costly.
The motorcycle artisans constructed a temporary crane on-site, expertly maneuvering and welding the one-inch-thick steel plates into place. The design features rods for support, achieving structural integrity and transparency between the treads. The final product, finished with a black rust-resistant coating stands as testament to ingenuity, resourcefulness and grace.
