Buildings on the Edge

Located at the border of Aspen’s main urban core and directly adjacent to the city’s primary ski lifts, Little Ajax negotiates a challenging site at the base of a hill—once a working silver mine. The site’s topography was considered difficult to develop due to its steep change in elevation.

In response to this conditions, radial slots are carved out from the main housing volume, fragmenting the building block into five separate smaller elements and creating a network of public trails and bridges that connect the city grid to the mountain landscape. These outdoor corridors allow for free circulation, forming an expanded promenade that enriches the architectural experience and integrates the project with its immediate surroundings.
