Catskills, NY
Set on a long, gentle slope of the Catskills Mountains, Understory House takes its name from its unique position—neither rooted on the forest floor nor lifted above the canopy, but suspended in between, where the forest midstory becomes the primary experience. Its compact, rectangular form conceals spatial richness: public and private rooms interlock around a central void, blurring thresholds between inside and out. The roof and floor planes frame the passing seasons, from dense summer foliage to long views revealed. Clarity of structure and enclosure supports a low-impact, energy-efficient approach to heating, cooling, and sustainability.
