St. Ann’s Playspace

Outdoor play, indoors

New York, NY

St. Ann’s Playspace transforms a small vacant lot into a year-round multipurpose court. The project encloses the 35 x 80′ lot with a playfully painted greenhouse-like structure that is sunlit, waterproof, and heated in the winter with infrared panels. The steel-framed structure features a translucent plastic roof and sliding fiberglass wall panels that open for natural ventilation, aided by the sloped steel truss. At just one-third the cost of a conventional gymnasium and with minimal operating costs, this space allows children to enjoy recess “outdoors” while remaining in a gym-like environment—usable in all seasons and weather.
