Sheltered House

A northern refuge

Newfoundland, Canada

This vacation house overlooking Newfoundland Bay demanded an emphasis on mass, not void, and shelter rather than exposure. The deck is notched into the form fully protected on three sides, while the steeply pitched roof sheds snow and deflects the wind from the Bay. The strength of the angular form completes the sweep of the slope from the sea in an echo of the harsh northern landscape and its severe winter climate.
