Rado Redux

Mid-century goes modern

Armonk, NY

Rado Redux expands a small 1950s house to meet the needs of a large family of eight. Originally designed by Czech émigré architect Ladislav Rado, the postwar modernist house embodied simplicity and a direct relationship to the surrounding landscape. A 1980s postmodern renovation compromised Rado’s vision. This 2010 addition restores the original spatial qualities of the house and increases livable space, reinforcing the openness of the family room while strategically introducing privacy for individuals. To meet the needs of current owners, the addition includes a solar-powered carport for electric vehicles.
