House to the Beach

From the bluff down to the lake

Chicago Northshore, IL

House to the Beach negotiates two site particularities: a 135-foot-high monumental temple right across the street and views of Lake Michigan 30 feet under the plot’s entrance.  To reach the lake shore, this four-level residence is divided in two. A two-story structure, with no windows to the street, acts as foil to the monument it faces, while the lower two levels are buried below the typical suburban lawn, linked by a processional stairway that completes the experience. Up from the bluff, long distance views of the horizon. Down on the beach, flip flops, sand and clear water.
